I first heard about Mutafukaz (MFKZ) two years ago, following Animation is Film Festival. It sounded crazy and fun so I kept it in mind. Of course it is one of the many alternative (not Disney/Pixar/Dream Works) animations that don’t get to the cinemas in my country so I had to wait right until last week to finally see it.
The story is based on the original comic of Guillaume Renard, who is also a co-director to the movie. Shojiro Nishimi is the one, representing the anime part. A French-Japanese collaboration of a superhero-action-thriller was amusing to watch, even though not obsessive (I personally fell asleep twice).
The plot, I suppose, was meant for kids 12-16 years old, but the deliberately obscene language, the violence and cruelty put it in the Red restriction age (over 17 in USA). It kind of reminds me of the latest Marvel super heroes movies, but full of animation possibilities.
It is as a whole a mess of bloody action andpeculiar comedy moments. Oh, and a spoiled romance ending. I wouldn’t recommend the animation as a piece of art, yet it is a great party film to watch with friends and popcorn. And get some beers.
